I love that comics have become such a huge cultural fixation. Honestly they’ve always been, but with the introduction into the film world, they’ve found more followers than ever. Amidst ever-changing social acceptances and norms, comics are changing too. This means the comics that were once so white and male they’d have been lost in the snow and not have been able to see anyone to not ask directions from, are kind of getting a face lift. It’s about time.

These creations, though loved for years, were originally created in a culture that praised the racist, misogynistic, homophobic viewpoint. Thus they became white males by default. With the exception of a very few (that were created by Stan Lee who faced great opposition) minorities were pretty much shut out, though they enjoyed the comics just as much as their majority counterparts.

So now that comics have moved to film races are changing, genders are changing and that’s great because it’s a step towards fixing a tainted legacy and including all of those people who love and support this industry. Later I’ll do a list of the best comic book heroes who’s race or gender has been altered.

However today I’d like to salute those women that came before all of this, before Blade made it profitable to be a comic book hero on the big screen. This isn’t a ranking in order by the way, these women were selected because they are bad ass and in some cases, broke barriers. If they are “alternate dimension” versions or versions made primarily to capitalize off of a male hero’s popularity they aren’t on this list. So anything with “she” in their title ain’t on here.

This list was created in response to the lack of knowledge people have in regards to women super heroes and the desire to see a list about them that didn’t involve the words “hot”, “sexy”, or “boobs.”

#10 Wonder Woman

Wonder woman

Has to be on here of course so I just went ahead and put her first. First appearing in December of 1941, Wonder woman came on the heels of a new exciting interest in comic books.

With Superman and batman leading the way, detective comics wanted to find a way to really capitalize on the comic book medium. Diana was created by the already very successful psychologist William Moulton Marston and his wife Elizabeth. He’d already invented the polygraph (lasso of truth inspiration) and had been hired as an educational consultant. Though her past after his death was a bit rocky, she was quite objectified for a while and dumbed down. Each issue had a different “pin-up” poster of her.

Eventually though they got it together and she regained her bad ass status as a warrior of the Amazons. In addition to succesful comic books, she had her own very successful television show.

“Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world”, Marston wrote. With her bad ass attitude, fighting prowess, magic lasso, sword, armor, flight, and super strength, if she says she’s ruling the world. You’ll be fighting her, not me.

#9 Storm

Storm_h622

Another one that HAD to make this list. First appearing in 1975 in the book Giant X-men, storm was originally supposed to be a male named Typhoon. However as they didn’t want an all male team, they combined two of the characters into one Storm Ororo Munroe. Born in Harlem to an African princess and a photojournalist, she didn’t have the cushy life one would expect of such noble birth. After moving to Egypt, her parents die leaving her an orphan.

Eventually she discovers her ability to control the weather and fly. She wanders through Cairo and the Serengeti using her powers to bring water to drought ravaged areas which eventually leads to her being praised as a goddess.

If that isn’t bad ass enough she eventually defeats Cyclops to become leader of the X-men, marries the black panther which literally makes her a queen of the most advanced civilization on the planet, she’s a diplomat, trained wolverine and most of the x-men in hand to hand combat, and is one of the most respected and widely known heroes ever created.

#8 RocketScreenshot_2015-03-01-10-44-07

That’s Rocket. Flying through an attacking alien spaceship. In this issue she takes on a Gauntlet of 6 of the strongest alien warriors in the galaxy, and whoops all of them. Rocket has a pretty unique character arch. After discovering Agustus Freeman’s unique abilities, she is able to convince him to start helping people under the moniker of Icon.

There’s a whole arch where she gets pregnant and her best friend takes over as Rocket until she gives birth. When she comes back she’s stronger than before and a lot more willing to protect the planet. She’s teamed up with Static, Star chamber AND Shadow Cabinet, Super Boy, Static, and many more.

You probably got used to her on television’s Young Justice. Determined, Strong willed, and infinitely creative Rocket is one to follow with this new relaunch of Milestone.

#7 Black Canary

black canary

First appearing in 1941 she appeared to be a villain. Turns out she was infiltrating a criminal gang. She eventually became popular enough to take over the comic she originally was only a side character in! Dinah Lance is an extremely adept hand to hand combatant and in different incarnations can utilize an ultrasonic scream.

She helped found the birds of prey(if you get a chance check out the birds of prey episode of Batman Brave and the Bold). A time endearing hero, she’s been featured in almost all of the incarnations of the DC universe from Justice League cartoons to the Arrow live action television show.

Black canary is one powerful hero.

Just stay out of her way.

#6 Amanda Waller

amanda waller

I want you to look at that cover. I mean REALLY look at it. Joker doesn’t even talk to Batman like that. You know who does? Amanda “The Wall” Waller Ph.D. First appearing November 1986 shes been a “good guy” sometimes and a “bad guy other times.” But her motives are never selfish. What she does she does because of her un-matchable ability to see the big picture. Always calm and collected she’s got a plan for everything. No super powers but hangs with the biggest and baddest of the DC universe from Brainiac to Darkseid. She started the suicide squad and has been a government agent for years. She’s basically the Nick Fury of the DC universe. She’s been played by Pam Grier, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and now Viola Davis.

Don’t mess with the U.S or anybody under Waller’s protection.

#5 Iron ButterFly

Screenshot_2015-03-01-13-50-04

That’s Iron Butterfly liberating a refugee camp from the evil soldiers that had taken over. She’s a Palestinian Muslim and has ferrokinetic control of any and all metallic substances. As a young girl she had to flee from persecution in her home town. Eventually her family ends up in a refugee camp that begins testing gas chemicals on them. As she watched her family die in front of her, she was gifted with her powers. At least that’s the story she tells people. A founding member of the Shadow Cabinet, she’s saved the world more times than we’ll probably ever know. Completely militaristic in her dedication to her task, she is no-nonsense and fights with great intelligence and perfect utilization of her powers.

iron butter

She never backs down from a fight and has the strength, tenacity, and strategic skills to walk away a winner.

#4 Donner & Blitzen

Donner and blitzen

Yes I know it’s a “two-fer” but these two are truly a pair. Donner is the super strong, bullet resistant, stoic one and Blitzen is the super fast, super smart, wise cracking one. After becoming unsatisfied with the Shadow Cabinet, they start their own faction called Heroes including Iota, Payback, Starlight, and the one and only Static Shock. They move to New York and immediately stop an alien invasion. Oh and they are lesbians, openly, which is kind of a big deal in comics, especially 90s comics.

Screenshot_2015-03-01-13-48-05

Always ready to go fight at the drop of a dime, these two teammates work together splendidly.

#3 Invisible Woman Susan Richards

Susan Richards had somewhat of a rocky start. When she first appeared in 1961 she was completely utilized as the damsel in distress. Being captured, running away to hide, or waiting for her husband to come save her was her M.O. But with the advent of her Force field projection powers she’s become widely recognized as the strongest member of the team. This is witnessed several times in the Civil War arch. She is strong and no longer defined by her husband.

Especially in Civil War she actually leaves him due to differences in opinion on the registration act and how things were being handled. From the comics, to the television shows old and new, to the films, this character’s growth has turned her into the heart and soul of one of the greatest superhero teams ever created.

#2 Vixen

vixen_0001

Vixen was supposed to be the first African woman super hero for DC. Unfortunately they canceled her series before it was made. But that hasn’t stopped her from becoming one of the most recognizable woman superheroes of all time.

In ancient Africa, the warrior Tantu asked Anansi the Spider to create a totem that would give the wearer all of the powers of the animal kingdom, only if they would use the power to protect the innocent. Tantu used the totem to become Africa’s first legendary hero. The totem was later passed down to Tantu’s descendants until it reached the McCabes.

Growing up in a small African village in the fictional nation of Zambesi, M’Changa province, Mari Jiwe McCabe heard the legend of the “Tantu Totem” from her mother. Sometime later, Mari’s mother was killed by poachers and she was raised by her father Reverend Richard Jiwe, the village priest. Reverend Jiwe himself was killed by his half-brother (Mari’s uncle) General Maksai. Maksai wanted the Tantu Totem, which Jiwe had possessed. Mari ultimately moved to America, where she established an identity as Mari McCabe and got a job as a model in New York City. She used her newfound wealth to travel the world. On a trip back to Africa, she came across her uncle and took back the Tantu Totem, using its power to become the costumed superhero Vixen.

Vixen-lion

Vixen subsequently has had her own limited series and has been featured in a wide variety of DC properties from television to video games.

#1 Lady Death Wish

Screenshot_2015-02-28-22-39-19

If you haven’t noticed this list has a lot of Milestone characters. Well trust they deserve to be on here, see that’s what happens when you make characters actually like people and not some stereotypical nonsense that fulfills your fantasy of what you want them to be. Take Deathwish for instance.

Now the original Deathwish has a terrifying backstory but Lady Deathwish (I know I said I wouldn’t have people like that but hear me out on one this one) has a pretty interesting tale and the entire series is told from his/her point of view.

Let me explain.

Deathwish starts off as male cop LT. Martin Rahm, but even then he knew deep down, this wasn’t who he really was (he still identified as male though). On a case he meets the original Death wish who shoves a gun in his face before realizing that Rahm was a cop searching the murder scene alone.

They fast forward four years and Martin Rahm is now Marisa, spoiler alert sex changes don’t make people any less bad ass. Marisa goes on a hunt for a sicko and ends up taking up the Moniker of DeathWish. Unfortunately only a limited series but there was plenty in there to solidify her standing as one of the biggest bad ass women in comic book history.

Well that’s my list, hope you guys enjoyed it. Are there other’s you’d like to see? Agree or Disagree? Go ahead and leave a comment I’d love to hear your ideas!

STORYLINE

megaman x 2 again

Its been six months since the storyline of the first Megaman X game. Sigma has been defeated however a few of his followers, “Mavericks”, are still very active. A group of them have stolen the parts to Zero’s body and have set up an elaborate plan to cause the downfall of X. Several reploids have joined together to for a team in order to help Sigma’s followers to complete their heinous plan. GAMEPLAY

gameplay mm

The gameplay is a simple, yet effective evolution of the first game. You still have the charge shot, you can jump off walls, and this time (thankfully) you start off with the dash.  There are 8 bosses and as you beat them you will be upgraded with their special weapon. If you are attentive and have a little skill you will find secret capsule and health upgrades provided by Doctor Light. As with any good games, the gameplay forces you to adapt.  Its a side scroller with many “secret” areas and  wave after wave of enemies.

Graphics

graphics 2

Huge colorful levels with memorable bosses. Starting from the beginning you have larger than life bosses and enemies. Everything looks amazing especially giving the fact that its SNES. Capcom developed a new chip they called C4 to up the graphics capabilities of the SNES. Everything looks great.

MUSIC

ending

You can’t talk about Megaman without talking about the amazing music. Great music is one of the staples of this series, something the fans always expect when purchasing the game. X2 delivers on all accounts. Each level has its own theme song and each boss has his own music as well. Well done, well thought out and each theme properly fit the level that it was used on.

STAND OR FALL?

Definitely stand! You can pick up this game at anytime and I don’t think it will EVER seem old. The story, the music, the gameplay all mesh together to make one amazing experience. Plus you can do this!

FINAL SCORE

If this game were released today it would sell out. Games like this are a little under appreciated these days. However I believe with word of mouth and the internet, it would be a HIT.

The newest script from Wiseguy Industries-Sci-Fi/Action Kingdom, Come

post

Ok so while I was gone I was able to use my ancient mac and an equally ancient script writing tool called “ScriptWright” to finish two feature length screenplays. (Yay!) Without further ado here is the logline for the first Sci-fi/Action film Kingdom, Come.

Logline: When a rogue survivor leads resistance-fighters against a murderous dictator who controls what remains of post-apocalyptic Earth, they must face his personal army, bionically-enhanced Un-dead soldiers!

Kingdom, Come Act One (1)

Just click the link above! Ok got it? Good. So anyway I’d love your opinion on the logline as well as the first act. I would like to hear honest opinions if you like it say so if you don’t, you can say that as well. I only ask that both sides be constructive if you do feel like answering. The second one is still undergoing construction but soon I will be uploading the first act of that one as well. I really appreciate you guys! Thanks!

The Direction of DC and hollywood aka the Goyer/Nolan effect

If you’ve been living under the largest rock in the world for the past 20 years, or with one of those tribes that don’t allow other humans to get close enough to give them cable television.

We don't care how many channels you have! There's still nothing good on!
We don’t care how many channels you have! There’s still nothing good on!

Then you know that comic book movies have really exploded, there are several of them that come out every year. Whether they are based on a comic book or a graphic novel or a combination of both (Dark knight rises), the comic book genre and Hollywood are now inextricably linked. Which is very interesting as the comic book movies made in the 80s and 90s sucked, I mean completely sucked. For evidence I give you the 90s captain america, dr strange, the punisher, Justice League, Nick Fury: Agent of shield and the little known and never released but somehow on youtube 90s Fantastic Four.

However in 1998 they decided to give David S Goyer another shot at this comic book live action gig(he wrote Nick Fury: agent of shield), and he penned the script for Blade. Blade starred Wesley Snipes at the height of his marketability and fame and did so well that it completely kicked off a new wave of movies. The dark comic book movie brought to the screen. It was the perfect set up for it actually, vampires, action, those things really transcend comics and can reach over to the regular movie goers. With Goyer’s amazing script this movie became the blueprint for all future comic book movies to follow including X-men, Iron man, superman returns etc. It also ushered in an age of acceptance and respect for comic book movies.

Mr. Goyer went on to write the rest of the Blade trilogy and then famously penned the script for Batman Begins. Teaming up with Christopher Nolan they completely reinvented the origin story and gritty reboot. This movie is beloved by casual movie goers and hardcore batman fans alike. There may be someone who doesn’t like it, but I haven’t found him.

WHERE IS HE???
WHERE IS HE???

This lead to the Dark Knight which IS the greatest Batman film of all time and I will not hear a WORD against it. Just the opening scene alone was enough to make me pass out from geek overload. THAT is how you introduce a villain. It also led to the best comic book video game ever created with the Arkham series. You may begin to see a pattern and that is what I am discussing today.

You see talent is hard to come across in Hollywood, not to say that there is a LACK of it there, but I’m saying its hard to come across, I’ll explain. It’s not an agent’s/producer’s job to find NEW talent, it’s his job to make the company money. So new people aren’t really what they are looking for, they are looking for a track record of making money. Much like how job searching today goes, you look and see they want someone with 3 years experience for a job but you can never get the job because…well you can’t get hired without three years of experience. It’s a whirlwind of aggravation to be sure and Hollywood you can see the result right there on the screen. The same people are making everything, the same people are acting in everything, they have their stable of actors and writers and now everything looks the same. Nobody new is getting in which means everything’s a remake or at the least a cheap rip-off of something that someone who is actually creative made in the first place. So they found a creative person in Goyer, he somehow slipped through the cracks and now he’s their go to guy for every single superhero, video game movie, as is Nolan. This is what I call the Goyer/Nolan effect, when you create something good in Hollywood they will leach your brain until they get every penny it can produce.

C'mon I know you've got something for Dr strange in there...
C’mon I know you’ve got something for Dr strange in there…

So now that the audiences have shown they want superheroes and they want dark. Hollywood says they want Goyer/Nolan! (nothing wrong with that they are very talented). Now everything looks dark, now everything is just a little different, and now we see the problem, they start trying to do things like them without them. Now the movies are FLOODED with dark, dingy, wannabe movies like Green lantern that just don’t work because that’s not really the character. This is pushing more and more people to independent films and outlets. The film festivals have been exploding lately, as have other outlets that promote indie films such as Netflix. Apparently the big movie studios are going to keep throwing more money into remakes and being safe until the movie going populace wises up and stops going to them. When that happens I believe what Spielberg said is true. They won’t try to make better movies, they’ll just up the prices and keep the movies they do make in theaters for a year.

That’s fine with me, gives me more chances for my films to be seen by greater audiences. However the Goyer/Nolan effect is taking great effect on DC. DC has long been known for their unwillingness to flinch when it comes to certain things about their characters. They even released a Mortal Kombat game with no real fatalities.

All he did was drill him into the ground? But where was the BLOOOD
All he did was drill him into the ground? But where was the BLOOOD

Now clearly they are willing to change origin stories and things about the characters they never would have before. Which could lead to a better DC but they walk a thin line of treading into Marvel territory. DC and Marvel have always been two different entities when it comes to characters. DC has had the more “SUPERhero” the over powered, high morals, and huge stars. Marvel has always been darker and more real. Both takes on the superhero have their merits but fans of DC and Marvel love them for these differences. DC is getting darker but I believe that they will be able to pull it off because they have gotten Guillarmo Del Torro to write and direct a film starring the lesser known but darker DC characters.

All in all the next few years in Hollywood should be interesting, but as much as I love comics…can I please get something a little different?

Cain The Conqueror-A brand new superhero!

Image

My name is Brian Bell and I am the creator of Cain The Conqueror. Cain is a brand new, exciting superhero that will surely excite true comic book fans and casual readers alike. The characters in all of the stories are the main focus and I spent a lot of time on their depth, motivations, and therefore the meanings behind all their actions. You will get to know and care for these characters. Cain is drawn by the amazing Jesse Hansen of Cornerstone Studios. Here’s a little back story on the greatest new superhero to hit the web.

Cain is the Great-great-great grand son of John the conqueror husband of the devil’s daughter from the folk tales of old, and the son of Valencia and Jerry DeConq. They are the leaders of an underground assassins/justice defenders league.Cain was raised to take over the leadership of the group. Everyday of his life was filled with training to perfect his wormhole tunneling technique(strafing), his martial arts, his detective skills, and his interrogation techniques.

When Cain came home from college he found his father dead, his sister missing and presumed dead, and his mother paralyzed from the waist down. His entire group has been exterminated except for him. Cain swears revenge on the people who committed this act and goes out leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Cain recruits Karson to help him but Karson betrays him for the opportunity to take over all the crime in the city. Cain then begins cleaning up the entire city during his search to kill those and uphold his clan’s honor. I’ve gotten the whole first series written just getting it inked to get it out soon.

I’d love to hear any feedback! I’ll answer any questions in the comment section below. Thanks everyone!

Spawn Versus The Ghost Rider: The battle from hell!

ghost_rider_vs__spawn_by_exialohengrin-d5oh4gl (1)

Prologue

Flames dance in the bowels of hell. Billions of sinners scream in horrible agony as their souls are ripped in half, burned, and made whole again only to repeat the process in the dark caves. Demons leap into the air fighting and torturing the souls of the wicked. The smell of brimstone and despair fill the already dank air. This is the eight circle of hell, on a pedestal in the center of the entire are lies a huge creature 50 stories tall, seemingly fire incarnate with horns and a long curving tongue. It surveys the circle with a hungry, animal like stare. Occasionally it reaches down and grabs a soul and devours it whole relishing the fresh screams and tossing the body back down into the pits. There is a sudden POP! Blue flames burst and a short, fat, stubby clown with blue face paint appears. He walks casually up to the giant creature on the pedestal.

“Heeeey Malebolgiaaaa wassup man! Loungin’ around hell all day, livin’ the life?”

Malebolgia stretches and yawns, “what do you want Violator?” he asks, his voice booms across the catacombs. The Violator looks up at him with a large grin.

“Oh fussy poo! You always think I’m here for myself!” he whines, “I come with news that doesn’t involve me just thought you should know my liege.” He bows deeply as Malebolgia looks on completely unimpressed.

“Then tell me and be on your way.”

The clown straightens up quickly and brushes himself off.

“Of course, of course, well you know you’re little project with the humans?” he asks with a grimace “hellspawn and all that? Well it seems your cousin Mephisto used that nasty business he had with Zarathos to his advantage.”

Malebolgia sighs and Violator has to grab on to a rock to keep from being swept off the platform. “Indeed as he tries to use everything to his advantage. Get to the point.”

“Yes boss man sir!” Violator responds with a false salute, “but that’s just it he’s bonded Zarathos’s soul to the soul of a Human by the name of Johnny Blaze, and he’s lost control of him.”

Malebolgia stares at the clown, the fire in his eyes ever rising he raises up into the air.

“He WHAT?” He roars in anger, ” and the fool lost control!?”

The clown covers his face as the flames from Malebolgia’s anger erupt throughout the circle causing it to become as bright as day for a moment before plunging back into darkness.

“Yep he’s over powered Zarathos and has been running around doing whatever he pleases,” Violator cackled, “its open season up there!”

Malebolgia reaches out and snatches Violator from where he stands and lifts him all the way up to eye level. His patience has worn to its thinnest chord with this clown. “I am in charge of all demons on the surface,” he yells “you are in charge of controlling them where I cannot! How can you believe this has nothing to do with you?”

The clown struggles to no avail. He knew Malebolgia would get angry but he usually just tells him what to do and sends him on his way. “Well I could just go up there and bring him to you…my lord.”

Malebolgia ponders this for a moment before slinging the clown to the ground.

“No…get Spawn, this will be his final test, tell him I want the head of this, Ghost Rider, and I want it now!”

“Yes sire,” says the Violator. He bows and with a POP and blue flames, he disappears.

Chapter One

Bright green eyes stare up at the night sky. Stars shine down as Spawn takes in the night listening, and waiting. His head turns, he heard a sound. He looks down from the top of the skyscraper he’s standing on. His red cape flaps in the wind. A small truck drives up and shuts off right in front of the building Spawn is standing on. A woman gets out from the driver’s seat clad in all black.

“Jessica,” Spawn mutters angrily. Five men jump out of the truck. Nobody notices Spawn leaping down from the building until he crashes all 500 pounds of his weight into the hood of the truck flipping it into the air. He kicks the truck down the street before the men even have time to react.

“Jessica!” he yells. The woman is shocked but her training kicks in, she takes cover and pulls out her gun.

Suddenly blue flames appear behind Spawn. The Violator appears.

“Hey kiddo, we need to chat.” He says, he grabs Spawn and they disappear.

POP! They reappear in a graveyard. In the distance the sun sets under the flashing carnival lights. The festive music carries to their ears on the wind.

“What the hell clown,” Spawn rages “I was in the middle of something!” Violator hops up on a tombstone.

“Settle down, you’ve got a job to do.”

“I’ve only got one job and its back that way.” Spawn turns to leave. The Violator appears in front of him and holds out his hand.

“No see this is coming straight from the big man himself,” he says “and you know you owe him one…or two or more. So just relax and listen.”

“Malebolgia wants this?” Spawn asks hesitantly. It’d be best not to piss him off too soon, Spawn wants him believing his little Hellspawn is well under control. The clown grins a large toothy grin and nods furiously.

“Yes, yes he does!” He laughs, “and it’s not far right over there!” He points at the carnival.

“Oh, I thought that was your house.”

The clown is not amused.

“Funny frog man,” He says “Listen there’s a guy over there parading around as you, the big boss wants you to take him down.”

“parading as me?” Spawn asks incredulously “how?”

“Oh I don’t know flaming head, spitting out hellfire, rides a bike or something,” he says offhandedly “the point is he’s got a demon inside ‘im bonded to his soul, Zarathos to be exact, and you’ve gotta get him out!”

“Since when does Malebolgia care about another ?”

“It’s not about Zarathos’s fool, the guy with the soul bonded to him is out of control” the clown professes “this is to be your final test, destroy him to prove yourself.”

“How?”

“Damned if I know, finding out is half the fun! Whoooo!” He spins around a disappears.

Spawn looks out at the carnival. This job may satisfy Malebolgia’s doubts about him and give him the edge he needed to take him down. One person stands in his way…The Ghost Rider. He changes his cape into a motorcycle, revs up, and rides towards the carnival.

Chapter Two

Johnny Blaze rustles through a bag of jellybeans picking out all the green ones and lining them up on the bar. He stares at them longingly before sweeping them up and chowing down on them.

“Hey Blaze.”

Johnny turns around with his mouth full of jellybeans and is shocked to see Roxanne.

“Roxy what are you doing here?” he asks “how’d you find me?” Roxanne scoots up to him and runs her hand down his neck.

“I always know where to find you rider.”

Johnny stares at her incredulously, “what…Roxanne…you remember me?” Roxanne laughs and pulls him to his feet from the bar, kisses him deeply and pushes him back playfully.

“Why wouldn’t I remember you silly?” She asks playfully “You’ve got one of my people burning inside you!”

Johnny steps back.

“What?”  he asks shakily, “what’d you say?”

Outside the sun’s last ray is disappearing.

“Oh we’re gonna get him back from you,” she says advancing and smiling widely. Was her face turning blue? Johnny squints it is! Roxanne’s tongue rolls out of her mouth. It’s an impossibly large size and Johnny steps back again. “Roxanne?” he asks “what is-”

Slowly blue face paint  takes form on her face, a huge belly pops out busting loose the buttons on her shirt. The leather outfit of the clown appears and he stands before johnny in his full form.

“Hey lover boy!” he laughs, “how’s about another kiss?” He perks his lips and comes at Johnny who jumps behind the bar.

“Great I kissed a demon,” he spits “and you made me lose my jellybeans, what do you want?”

“hey man I’m here to help you I might as well get something out of it right?” he chuckles “I don’t have much more time but just know there’s a big green guy coming for your head, or flaming skull.”

“Who is he and why?”

“Now now, you don’t need to know all that, I just thought it only fair to give you a little heads up! Tata for now!”

POP! and in a blue flame he’s gone. The sun finally sets as Johnny stares blankly at the space the clown once stood. A big green guy ? Why was he after me?  The worst luck ever since I opened that damned book! Roxy was right…

CHAPTER 3

Johnny stands at the bar and downs the rest of his bag of jellybeans. Flames begin erupting around his whole body, Johnny falls to his knees. In a few seconds the flames have spread from head to toe and he is a flaming skeleton clad in a leather jacket and biker pants. He shoots out a flame which turns into a giant flaming motorcycle. He revs twice –

BOOM! The door of the bar explodes into tiny wood fragments as Spawn comes screaming in on his bike. He wastes no time and pulls out two Barettas and unloads both clips directly into ghost rider’s chest.

Ghost Rider, caught off guard almost slips off his bike. He hangs on with one hand as his bike takes off towards Spawn. With his other hand he reaches into his jacket and pulls out a shotgun. He fires as Spawn jumps behind the bar. Bottles and glasses explode sending glass and liquor flying everywhere. Ghost Rider skids to a stop at the door.

“Who are you!” He screams at Spawn, “and what the hell do you want?”

Spawn answers with a grenade thrown directly into Ghost Rider’s mouth. It explodes and bone and hellfire rain down upon the bar. Spawn jumps out from behind the bar and goes over to check Ghost Rider’s body. The motorcycle has vanished. Spawn kneels down and grabs the skeleton’s neck. Slowly Ghost Rider’s head begins reforming.

Ghost rider grabs spawn and throws him across the room. Spawn slams hard into the wall on the opposite side of the building and slides to the floor. So he can regenerate as well, he may be more like me than I thought Spawn thinks.

Before Spawn can get to his feet Ghost Rider’s head has reformed and he whips his chain across the room and wraps it around Spawn’s neck. He grabs at it to no avail as Ghost Rider lifts him high in the air and slams him on the ground. He whips Spawn back and forth across the room clearing tables left and right before throwing him right through a wall into the middle of the carnival.

Spawn tumbles through the carnival knocking over a few kiosks before coming to a stop almost in the center of the carnival. Ghost rider shoots out of the bar on his hellfire motorcycle swinging his chain over his head. Spawn leaps to his feet. His cape forms a giant battle-axe, as Ghost rider speeds at him he swings the axe catching the ghost rider in mid-air. The axe catches right in the middle of Ghost rider’s body and spawn lifts him up into the air, pauses, and brings him to the ground with a might crash. Then he violently slams the axe down onto Ghost Rider’s body over and over again. Bone and fire fly up into the air. Ghost rider rolls over and dodges the next strike jumping to his feet. Spawn extends the axe directly at Ghost rider shooting him back into the bar. He stands and stares at the second hole in the wall. Did that get him?

VROOM!

Ghost rider comes back out on his bike he stops in front of the hole in the wall and revs up. Spawn shakes his head and turns his cape back into a motorcycle. He revs up and they both take off towards each other.

Their bikes hit and both turn the same direction heading through the carnival side by side. Spawn and Ghost rider trade punches back and forth. Ghost rider jabs him in the side a few times before Spawn grabs his arm into an arm lock. Ghost rider pulls out his shotgun and fires. The blast rips a hole in Spawn’s midsection revealing his stomach and intestines. It immediately starts rebuilding itself.

“Come on Rider, do better,” Spawn says “when I rip that demon out of you I want to feel accomplished.”

“If you’d caught me last week I would’ve given him to you,” says Ghost Rider “But now I’m in control, and I’ve got work to do.” He punches Spawn in the head and tries to kick him off his motorcycle. Spawn recovers and sends a punch at Ghost riders head, Ghost rider peels off and rides directly up the side of the Ferris wheel. He perches at the top.

Spawn looks up at him and gets off of his bike.  Ghost rider sits atop the Ferris Wheel on his bike. This green guy was tough and fast. What the hell’s he doing now?

Spawn lifts his arms into the air, and takes off into the sky.

Great he can fly, Ghost rider thinks.

Spawn shoots back down at him. As soon as he gets close ghost rider jumps off of his bike and grabs Spawn by the cape. He whips him around and grabs his neck.

“Look into my eyes!” He stares into Spawn’s eyes as he struggles to break free, then his body goes limp. Ghost rider performs the penance stare.

The ghost rider is confused…where is his soul? “How are you operating without a soul?” He screams in anger.

Spawn’s suit acts of its own accord and turns the cape into a spike and drives it into Ghost rider’s mid section. Ghost rider drops Spawn and he falls down the side of the wheel. Right before he hits the ground he awakens and flips landing on his feet. I might need a little help after all he thinks.

He places his hand to the ground as The Ghost rider revs his engine and tears down the side of the Ferris wheel. The Gates of hell open and demons flood out towards the ghost rider. Spawn grabs the back of a flying demon and rides up towards the Ghost Rider.

Demons fly at the Ghost rider he takes out his whip and shotguns and blasts and whips his way through them. Demon body parts litter the sky and shotgun pellets rain down. He tries to blast some with hellfire but they fly right through it. He finally gets through the front line of demons and launches himself off the bike towards spawn. Spawn leaps off the demon towards Ghost Rider.

Chains whip out from Spawns body, The Ghost Rider wraps his chain around Spawns neck and fires his shotgun. The chains from Spawn’s body wrap around ghost rider and completely stops his movement. The chains constrict tighter and tighter as Spawn falls through the air and back onto the demons back. He opens up a hole to hell as he crushes The Ghost Rider. He fires green necroplastic energy balls at the being in his grasp turning the ghost riders fire from orange to green.

They fly through the first circle of hell and the Ghosts Rider’s body begins to shatter. Spawn stops at the 8th circle of hell. Malebolgia rises all the way to his feet.

“Is he the one you wanted Malebolgia?” Spawn yells up at him. “Well here he is!” He throws Ghost rider’s broken and battered body on the floor of the catacomb.  Malebolgia looks down upon his servant curiously.

“You were able to bring in the flesh-demon,” he says “now rip the demon soul from his body and cast him into the pits.”

Spawn stands before Ghost Rider’s motionless body, he reaches down and rips off the jacket. He holds his hand out. A bright green glow emanates from his hands. He plunges his hand into the Ghost Rider’s Skeleton chest. His body starts shooting off green flames. Spawn pulls his hand back with great effort and rips Zarathos free from the Ghost Rider. Johnny Blaze now lies on the floor. His body immediately begins burning. Johnny Blaze screams and rolls around the ground in agony.

“The pits,” Malebolgia says. Spawn kicks Johnny Blaze deep into the pits of hell.

“It is done,” Spawn says “is there any more you require Malebolgia?” Malebolgia looks down at Spawn pondering his existence and worthiness.

“You shall be…interesting,” he says “I will have many more…exerting tasks for you in the future.”

“Fine, are there anymore like him?”

“None. He was the last.” Malebolgia looks down at him “I could make another if you fancy…a sparring match.”

“If that’s what you want.” Spawn replies, his green eyes never wavering from the fiery pits of Malebogias pupils. “I will fight again, just tell the clown to stay out of my affairs.”

Malebolgia grabs Spawn and lifts him up to eye level. “I will talk to Violator, and I will talk through violator,” he says “when you see him you address him as you would me.”

Spawn looks at Malebolgia. I think I’ve got his trust, my uprising will be completely undetected. A shame I had to off such a good warrior though. He would’ve been very helpful in the uprising.

Spawn nods silently at Malebolgia.

“Good now get back to the surface, I want fresh souls.” he places Spawn back on the floor. Spawn nods again, stands straight, and teleports out of the catacombs.

“Danny Ketch…good enough host as any…” Says Malebolgia, “what do you say Zarathos?” He looks toward the ball of flame on the floor where Johnny Blaze once laid and only just sees it dive over the edge down, down, down, towards Johnny Blazes burned body. Malebolgia stares after him shakes his head and lies back down. I guess I’ll have to call upon Spawn again he thinks as he stretches and begins once again surveying the circle.

Well thank you all for reading my fan fiction of Spawn VS The Ghost rider. The abilities, stats, and characters used to come to this conclusion were gained from various locations including comic books, official marvel and image statistics, and opinions polled from across the internet.

(Continuity-this happens right when both are starting out and assumes that they both were created around the same time.)

Again thanks for reading I hope you enjoyed reading it at least half as much as I enjoyed writing it. This was really fun actually. I plan on doing one of these a month So stay tuned! If you’d like to see any two superheros or supervillains go at it feel free to say so in the comment section! I’m always looking for ideas!

You guys are the best!

Most Underrated Xbox Title of All Time!

advent_rising10 (1)Advent Rising!

System: Original Xbox

Price: Well when I bought it used it was $2

I remember when I first picked this game up for 2 dollars at a pawn shop in college. My friends and I came back from band practice (all music majors at the time) put it in the Xbox and sat back to see what a crappy game I’d purchased.

Immediately we were blown away by the composition of the music. I mean epic is basically the bare minimum for the term you’d have to use to describe it. It caught us so off guard we actually laughed.

This wasn’t what we expected.

STORYLINE

Almost immediately we were thrown into a new world where the stars were no longer the limits and humans were being sent out as ambassadors to meet an entire species that thought of them as holy creatures. Soon after they meet them, the aliens that want to destroy them attack their ship. The main character Gideon uses previously unknown psychic powers to help stop the attack and then he is sucked through a wormhole. That’s where the game really starts.

I’m big on character driven stories. I think everyone subconsciously is, I mean you can’t really care about what’s going on in a story if you don’t care about the characters. In advent rising they really push the dynamics between the characters. Gideon is the younger brother of a hot shot war hero. His brother basically gets him a job just off of his charisma and Gideon is left wondering if he is completely worthless. There are many other characters that add to the drama and feel of this game. Overall this storyline just gets 5 stars from me, this is what I love to see from my video games. Take it seriously, develop those characters and subplots!

Characters

advent rising 5

Gideon Wyeth (voiced by Will Friedle) — The main character of the game. He is a member of one of the last human outposts.
Ethan Wyeth — Gideon’s hotshot older brother. Because of his celebrity following the Independence Wars, he is assigned the role of pilot for the mission of first contact with the Aurelians. He used his connections to instate Gideon as his co-pilot.
Olivia Morgan (voiced by Vanessa Marshall) — Gideon’s fiancé, a scientist assigned to Luriam space station.
Marin Steel — A decorated pilot from the Independence Wars, she encounters Gideon as he attempts to escape Bahr Han on her ship. She is captured by the Seekers and unsuccessfully imprisoned on the island of Teran, having developed her own psychic powers.
Kelehm Farwaters (voiced by Dwight Schultz) — A ninth-tier Garhgon (an Aurelian religious caste), he has trained himself in the telekinetic arts. Kelehm belongs to “the old faith” which states that the discovery of humans is part of a prophecy and the Aurelians will gain greater psychic power through them.
Enorym Tenspur (voiced by Michael Bell) — Ally to Gideon and the most highly trained of the Aurelian elite fighters, Enorym serves as a commander of the elite Felidic warriors. Enorym leads an assault on a Seeker ship shortly after Gideon learns how to use his psychic powers.
Bud – A troublemaking Marine that starts a bar fight with Gideon and later challenges him and Ethan to a training match. After losing, Bud fires a blaster at Ethan. The player then has the choice of either using a stungun to disable Bud or picking up a blaster and killing him, which determines whether his squadmates help you or abandon you in a later gameplay segment.
K’Chell — A Seeker ambassador who interrupts the planetary ruling council and demands that the Aurelians hand over Gideon and Marin. When Kelehm refuses, K’Chell kills him, then escapes to the ansible to inform the Seeker armada.
Sevan — A council member on Aurelia, he leads a rebellion to give the humans to the Seekers and avoid retaliation. After staging a coup, he co-opts the council, gives Marin to the Seekers, and puts Enorym on trial for treason.
Banath — Originally serving as Enorym’s best warrior, he is revealed to be a double agent for Sevan. Having planted a Seeker ambush inside the ansible, Banath becomes visibly angry after Enorym orders him to escort Marin back to the Aurelian capital. He returns with a dropship manned by other rebels after giving Marin to the Seekers and announces his betrayal by killing one of Enorym’s warriors. Gideon kills Banath shortly after Enorym is put on trial.

GAMEPLAY

d57-advent-rising

As Gideon you’ll be able to utilize his kinetic abilities. One of my favorite parts of this game is the fact that he is just learning them. Now clearly this something many games use in order to make your character weaker in the beginning so the game will be harder. However in Advent rising they really mean he is LEARNING and he doesn’t stop ever. You get new and exciting moves and upgrades all the way through until the last stage. The greatest part of this game is they always throw something new at you and honestly its not even when one thing gets old, they just do it. Oh you’ve got a gun? Here take this Kinetic energy, oh you’ve got kinetic energy? How about SHOOTING FIREBALLS out of your hands? Oh I see you’ve got a Jeep- HOVER CRAFT!

One of the more interesting parts of this game is the control system. They have made use of a “flick targeting” control system that utilizes the second joystick. It’s very cool once you get used to it. Basically you flick the stick in the direction of the offending enemy and all of your attacks then go directly to that foe. This really comes in handy as its a large cartoony looking world. A third person shooter like that would have been a hair pulling experience trying to aim.

The enemies are intelligent and vary in size and abilities. They all have several specialized attacks of their own. While one tries to over power you with its extra limbs, another might try to snipe you from a distance, while yet another will try and Rambo you with automatic weapons. All in all the controls and enemies you fight make for very exciting and fun game-play.

Here are the actual controls for the game.

GRAPHICS

advent graphics 2

Now the graphics are the only reason why any one would ever doubt this game. The director made the choice to have elongated limbs which made them look more like comic book characters. This is an artist’s choice, however it gave them a weird gangly look (the game was originally supposed to be a comic book which may explain why he wanted this so badly). The frame rate does lag in certain areas doing certain things, however it is never enough to detract from the game as a whole. Plus I mean look at it! It still looks AMAZING for an original Xbox game. It plays well and by well I mean its extremely exciting.

Music

Ok I have to come back to this music because…well it’s part of me! I love music and truthfully a game with poorly composed music will make me put it down just as quickly as bad graphics.

But here are two examples of the total and complete epicness of the music for this game.

Here’s another one which is used a few times during boss battles but they have more themes as well.

The music was composed by Emmanuel Fratianni and Michael Richard Plowman and performed by Laurie Robinson and Tommy Tallarico. Here’s the list of songs for the entire soundtrack.

WHY ISN’T THIS GAME HAILED AS AWESOME?

Well apparently there was a terrible marketing strategy of people being able to win one million dollars if they were able to decipher secret messages in the games various levels. Due to issues with security they had to shut down the contest which cost them quite a lot of money and advertisement. Also the first reviews for this game were way off, giving them five out of ten. Later they went back and fixed that with reviews like 8 out of ten or 7.8 out of 10 (IGN). Without advertising its hard to really get as big as you should be able to. However there is a core community online that knows about this game and they LOVE it. Its getting bigger and bigger by word of mouth, unfortunately it may be a little late for the company that produced it. However there are sites and Facebook pages online dedicated to this game and to creating a sequel.

SEQUEL

Will there be one? Who knows, it’s one of those things, teased forever but it’s anybody’s guess. Some things weren’t meant for sequels (Hangover I’m looking at you). However this game clearly was written to be given at least two more entries. Especially taking into account the terrific ending that happens AFTER the credits. Oh and that’s not just a cutscene there is GAMEPLAY after the credits. Yeah I had walked away (like a BOSS) after thinking I had beaten one of the best games ever made.

My face when I saw what was going on.

Suffice to say that last part was the icing on the cake. I mean that really let me know how much one, they respected this genre, and two knew about cinematic qualities being infused with video games. It was an amazing teaser for the next game which unfortunately never came out. Yet there are still those who are pushing for it.

On the plus side they have produced a line of comic books that I haven’t read but apparently they follow up so if you want to check those out here.

RATING

5_Star

If you couldn’t already tell this is getting five out of five stars. The story is excellent, the music is amazing, the gameplay is exciting, fun and always advancing. It does a great job in making you feel what Gideon is feeling and all of these things merge together at the end to make one amazing experience.  The replay value is VERY high on this as they’ve included a way to upgrade different abilities. Also if its ever NOT fun to dive through the air and force blast an enemy into a lake of lava please stop the planet because I’ll be getting off.

So the bottom line is, if you haven’t gone out and purchased this game, do it. Seriously it’s like 2 bucks and an original Xbox is like 30 bucks now(because its not backwards compatible sucks I know.)

Thanks for reading everyone! I’ll keep  you up to date with new Xbox One news as well as PS4 news when they start delivering it. As always I’ll be bringing you old school reviews!

Thanks Again!

Sincerely
