Spoiler Free Review Presents: Captain Phillips

Plot

Captain Phillips, played by Tom Hanks, boards a ship to take food and water to Mombasa. The trip will take them around Somalia. Wary of heightened pirate activity in the area, Captain Phillips is putting his crew through test emergency drills to help them prepare when the attack happens. The rest of the movie basically centers around the Captain attempting to save his crew and cargo with little, to no regard for his own safety.

EXECUTION

The beginning established the characters on both sides. I really respected the fact that they at least tried to show how poverty-stricken Somalia really is. It gave the pirates a more realistic feel. However after that opening sequence we don’t get much of that and it frequently delves into the “corny” realm. The acting and direction were superb, it’s just the lines were a tad banal.

Music

A few popular tunes here and there such as Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” Mostly silence or a nice film score composed by Henry Jackman(Kick-ass,Xmen first class,This is the end). While the music did help create a nice suspenseful mood, it wasn’t intrusive.

Rating

3-stars-out-of-5

While the acting and direction were great, the movie is undeniably boring and a little corny. Tom Hanks’ performance was great but it was like watching CNN for 2 hours, yes it’s entertaining, but it gets real old, real quick. All in all I’d say catch this on DVD but there are other movies out there that I wish I’d spent my money on.

Thanks for reading!
